The 48x40 GMA Pallet

Nearly everything we move is this footprint. It is the size nearly every receiving dock in the country is already set up for, which is worth more than it sounds.

Why this footprint and not another

A pallet that fits the rack, the truck and the customer's own handling equipment causes no argument at the far end, and the pallet nobody mentions is the one that did its job. That is the whole case for the standard footprint. It is also the cheapest pallet to buy and the easiest to replace, because everybody has them.

Size is one axis, condition is the other

The footprint tells you nothing about the state of the pallet. The same 48x40 comes as Grade A, clean and square with nothing patched, or Grade B, in service and showing it but sound throughout.

Grade A costs more. Whether that is worth paying is a question about your work rather than about the size: what a customer sees, what an automated line has to read as a shape, and what goes several meters up into a rack are the cases where condition earns its money. What moves the number overall is set out on our pallet prices page.

Heat treatment is a third, separate thing

Where a receiving requirement calls for treated timber, our heat treated pallets have been held at 56°C for 30 minutes at the core. Treatment is separate from condition, so the two are specified together rather than one implying the other.

If you are shipping internationally, tell us before you order and we will confirm exactly what the stock carries.

What the size is not

It is not a load rating, and neither is the grade. A, B and C are condition grades in the used pallet trade, not tested classes, and we publish no weight figures against them. Tell us the weight and how it will be handled and we will talk it through before you order.

When 48x40 is the wrong answer

When the product overhangs, the impact of every forklift, doorway and trailer wall lands on the goods rather than the wood. When it under-fills, you are paying to ship the empty deck around it. And when the pallet has to fit a machine base, a piece of fabricated steel or a container laid out to the inch, no standard footprint is going to do it. Those are the cases for a custom size built to your dimensions.
